It is not possible to deny that Florence is the art city par excellence due to the great number of impressive churches, the museums and thousands of open-air pieces of art. Visiting all of them means that you can effort a whole year holiday in Florence!
The David by Michelangelo, Florence
So:
- if a tourist come to the Cradle of the Renaissance just for a short break
- if you are looking for a different city tour
- if you dream to spent a day in Florence with the symbol both of strength and youthful human beauty
…then listen to what we suggest you: a special tour of Florence in the footsteps of the David.
Our departure point is in Piazza della Signoria, the main square of the city , where the David was originally placed as a symbol of the Florentine Republic, strong and victorious against the enemies, his gaze turned towards Rome. Admire its beauty and be ready to compare it with the original one. In 1873, the David was moved to the Accademia Gallery: it is the second step of our tour.
While moving towards the north of the city, hundreds of little Davids will crowd the stands (that definitely worth your attention!), extending the wait until the encounter with the true David.
The David by Michelangelo, Florence
This long-awaited meeting will take place in the Accademia Gallery, where you will admire the perfect ideal of male beauty in art, carved from a single block of marble by the skill of Michelangelo.
The idea of David as a beauty ideal was not common to all artists: let’s move to the Bargello Museum, going back towards the center of the city, to compare the work of Michelangelo to the ones of Donatello and Verricchio.
In order to reach the last step of the David-tour you need to cross the Arno river (not so fast: take your time to enjoy the views!) until Piazzale Michelangelo, the square dedicated to the artist.
Here you can find another copy of the David and enjoy a stunning panorama over the city: the Piazzale is, actually, the most popular observation point overlooking the city, the one reproduced in the many postcards, that cannot miss in your Instagram profile with the hashtag #charmingitaly (lol).
